        1、Educational Background

Your Graduateduniversity, your career in your university, and some benefits for learning inyour university(why you choose this university)?

I graduated from Queen’sUniversity with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Sociology, and from theUniversity of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Education.

I chose Queen’sUniversity for my undergraduate studies because its campus is smaller andeasier to navigate than bigger schools like York University or the Universityof Toronto. At Queen’s most students live at or near the school so it has astrong student community, whereas many students at schools like the Universityof Toronto live in cities nearby and commute to school so less students areinvolved in student activities. Another reason that I chose Queen’s Universityis because it offers a general first year which means that first-year studentsdo not need to declare what their major (focus of study) will be until thesecond semester. This gives students the opportunity to explore different areasof study before deciding their area of focus. Queen’s University had a goodEnglish undergraduate program with excellent professors when I studied there soit was a good choice for my area of study.

(学霸Ms.Johnston!)

2、English Learning and life in Maple Leaf

Can you still rememberhow many scores you get for English in your high school period? Share yourEnglish learning experiences.

In high school I had a90% average in English. I was actually 1 year ahead in English so I finished mygrade 12 English course when I was in grade 11. My grade 8 teacher recommendedanother student and myself to take grade 9 English at our neighbouring highschool.

Did you ever join anyMaple Leaf’s activities during these months teaching in Maple Leaf? Which oneis your favorite?

I was one of the clubmanagers for Destination Imagination with Ms. Phinney and Mr. Jenkins. I reallyenjoyed seeing the students develop their team work, creative thinking skills, and improvisation performance skills. Ms. Phinney, Mr. Jenkins, and I are allproud of the improve teams’ dedication and optimistic attitudes during theregional tournament in Shanghai, and the national tournament in Hebei Province.

Ms. Johnston and Ms.Phinney at the national DI competition in Heibei Province.

If you can hold an eventin Maple Leaf, what event you would prefer to hold? it can be some activitiesthat exist in your high school but never happened in the Maple Leaf.

In high school I took aLeadership course in grade 11, and was the Promotions Executive on StudentCouncil in grade 12. As a leadership class student and Student CouncilExecutive I helped organize the yearly haunted maze for Halloween. I also thinkit would be fun for the Homerooms to have a door decorating contest aroundChristmas time. It would be a fun competition and make the school’s hallwayslook festive!

        3、Impression andExpectation of Students

What is the mostmemorable thing you ever meet in Maple Leaf with your students?

The most memorable thingI did was go attend the regional and national Destination Imaginationcompetitions with the two improvisation teams.

Could you tellme something about activities or clubsin your college life ?

Certainly!Whether you are a student who participates in activities now or not you shoulddefinitely join a club or student activity in university. There are so manyclubs in university to choose from – most universities offer clubs for almostevery interest! There are fun intramural teams like dodgeball and innertubewater polo, Quidditch teams, student-run charity organizations, cultural clubsand so much more.At Queen’s University I was involved at Oxfam at Queen’s whichis affiliated with the International NGO Oxfam. We ran educational campaignsthat about political, human rights, and environmental issues including: women’svoting rights, HIV/AIDS, land grabs, climate change, and Fair Trade products. Iwas also involved in a club where students volunteered twice a month at ananimal shelter to walk the dogs and cuddle cats! Lastly, during my Bachelor ofEducation I was involved in Student Council. All of the activities I wasinvolved in allowed me to meet new friends, connect with the student community, learn about the world, and develop and grow as an individual.

What do you want yourstudents to learn in your English classes?

I want my students tolearn communication skills and skills that they can use in their daily life, beyond analyzing literature.

What do you what tolet your students know during their high school period?

I want students to enjoyand cherish their high school years. You will only be a teenager once. Makegood memories with your friends in high school, because after high school manyof you will be studying in different places abroad. Besides, the end of thesemester can be a stressful time with end of term assignments and final exams.Get lots of sleep, eat well, and take study breaks.
